In the United States and many other countries, Earth Day is held on April 22 of each year. Earth Day is meant to promote environmental citizenship and awareness around the world. There is another Earth Day held in the autumn in the southern hemisphere. U.S. politician Gaylord Nelson founded the Earth Day that the northern hemisphere celebrates in 1970.

Earth Day was founded to demonstrate sustainability. During the time that Earth Day was founded people drove around in cars that were fueled by leaded gas. Pollution was just thought to be the norm for luxury. Earth Day is supposed to fill people in on issues that they might not know about and to let people know that we do care about the Earth.

The Earth Day Network was founded by the first organizers of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. This organization promotes environmental awareness and worldwide action year around. Earth Day Network is in 174 different countries and strives to “grow and diversify the environmental movement worldwide, and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle for promoting a healthy, sustainable planet. We pursue our mission through education, politics, events, and consumer activism” (Earth Day Network).

Chico, California is trying to do its part in promoting sustainability. April is considered, in Chico, to be Earth month. Throughout the month Chico State University is promoting events to inform people about different environmental issues. Today there will be events promoting turning off all your lights for an hour and using tap water instead of bottled water. There are many events throughout the month and if you are interested in going to one I suggest you do. Chico State Earth Month Events

I believe that Earth Day does do a lot for the environment. It raises a lot of issues that some people do not think about. It shows the higher-ranking people in businesses and in politics that people do care and people do want cleaner and smarter solutions to our problem s that we face today.
